Újlipótváros is found at the heart of Budapest, a stone’s throw from countless landmarks: in a matter of minutes, you can reach sites such as the Banks of the Danube, the Parliament, Margret Island, the Víg theatre, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Duna Corso, and Budapest’s very own pedestrian high street, Váci utca and the Fashion Street.

Before we learn more about the sites of Budapest, we should begin by talking about where you can grab breakfast or coffee in the area, or perhaps relax with a glass of wine or enjoy a romantic dinner. I may be biased, but the following are some of my favorite places.

Leaving the apartment on Hollán Street, you arrive to a short pedestrianized area before reaching the main road; on the lefthand side, you will find one of the most popular cafés in town (and one where I frequently stop), the Madal Cafe. In addition to world class coffee and delicious sandwiches, the pastries here are excellent.

If you find yourself craving a particularly delicious croissant in a family and pet friendly environment, try the Royal Baguette Pékség (turn left onto Katona József utca and it will be right there). I stop here every morning on my way to work. 🙂

The lovely Ildikó awaits me with my favorite freshly baked croissant. They also offer whole wheat varieties, but the best is truly the pistachio stuffed. Of course, you can grab coffee here, too, to enjoy alongside your pastries.

If you would prefer to start your day with freshly squeezed juices, an incredible variety of traditional and exotic juices await you at  Lényeg, right next door to IIldikó’s bakery at Katona József street 31. Be forewarned: with so many varieties, it can be difficult to choose! My personal favorites remain apple with sea buckthorn and carrot juice with ginger. Note: you need to pay a small deposit for the glass bottles, or you can bring your own cup and return for frequent refills! Nothing could be more heavenly and healthy!

Walking in the direction of the Danube, the next cross street will be the legendary Pozsonyi Rd. Walking here, you will find countless cafés and tea shops. Another personal favorite,  Három Tarka Macska Kézműves Pékséget (3 Colored Cats Artisan Bakery). In addition to their exceptional artisan breads, you can find sandwiches and fresh juices. Another personal tip: I almost always give in to temptation and order their truly delectable Belgian chocolate milk snack (Hungarian: belga csokis tejfalat) to enjoy with my coffee. 🙂

Another excellent choice for breakfast in the area would be Bubo, found at the beginning of Pozsonyi Rd. Here, guests can choose from a wide variety of delicious dishes before heading out to explore the city.

If you are more interested in local bakeries, nearby our apartment is the Sovány Vigasz (Skinny Consolation) where all sorts of gluten-free, sugar-free, and lactose-free pastries are available. If you would be interested in trying the best Knödel (sweet dumplings) in the city, don’t miss the Édesmindegy (Sweet Nothing) Dessert Bar, also at the beginning of Pozsonyi Rd.

After an action-packed day of discovering Budapest, you may find yourselves famished. Luckily, there is no shortage of incredible restaurants from which to choose in our area! I can wholeheartedly recommend Mosselen Belgian Beerhall at the corner of Pannónia and Katona Streets. The kitchen is fantastic and the ratio of price to quality cannot be beat. Please note, however, that there is no outdoor seating here. If you prefer to dine al fresco, the Blue Tomato directly across the street is an excellent alternative.

Another excellent café/restaurant right nearby is the Sarki Fűszeres, popular with well-heeled locals. If you are looking for excellent Italian in Budapest, you’re in luck: due to the large number of Italians living in the city, there is no shortage of excellent, authentic Italian restaurants. One fine choice nearby the apartment is Okay Italia (Szent István körút 20).

In terms of more exotic flavors, the excellent Pándzsáb Tandori Indiai Éttermet (Punjab Tandoori Indian Restaurant) is nearby at Pannónia u. 3, while there is an Egyptian snack bar/bistro on Katona József u. If you are looking for taste of Thai, we recommend the PadThai wokbár at Nyugati tér.

If you are looking to party nearby, the legendary Morissons 2 is just across the Szent István körút. This Budapest institution is housed in a large residential building which has been transformed into a gigantic nightclub consisting of a series of different rooms, each with their own atmosphere and style of music, so everybody is sure to find something they like. Largely frequented by a young(ish) clientele.

Budapest’s iconic Gozsdu Udvar can be reached quickly by hopping on tram 4/6 just up the road at Jászai Mari tér and taking it 3 stops to Király utca or by taking bus #9 for five stations over to Deák tér. Budapest’s very own entertainment district offers fantastic cuisine, entertainment, and culture all in one area. There’s always something going on here, and everyone – independent of age – can find something to enjoy here. Due to Gozsdu’s cosmopolitan nature, we highly recommend a visit. 🙂

Also in this area (the heart of the Jewish District) you can find the hidden speakeasy Hotsy Totsy Bar, offering a wide range of unique, handcrafted signature cocktails. If you’re looking for a light bite in the area before beginning a night of partying, Budapest’s Mazel Tov is just around the corner, their Jerusalem cheesecake is a must!

Budapest also offers incredible views over the city from a series of rooftop bars. One of the more popular options, 360 Bár, offers a chill, upscale experience across from the Opera, just a short stroll down Andrássy Út from Oktogon (2 stops on tram 4/6).

While it’s a bit further afield (nearby the Chain Bridge on the Buda side), the Leo Rooftop Bar offers a truly breathtaking panorama of the Budapest skyline.

While neither of these options will be remembered for their low prices, the stunning views and exquisite cocktails should be unforgettable.

Budapest is also renowned for its hot mineral baths. If you are visiting over a weekend (Fri or Sat evenings), consider melting your stress away with a glass of bubbly champagne at the incredible Rudas Bath’s nighttime bathing. These baths are roughly 30 minutes away via public transport, including a long, breathtaking stretch by Parliament and along the Daube with the famed tram #2; your trip can be easily planned here

The tram #2 similarly brings guests to the Bálna, another one Budapest’s iconic attractions. This center serves as a center for shopping, culture, entertainment, and gastronomy, all in one, and due to its fantastic location on the banks of the River Danube, it offers an unbeatable spot for outdoor relaxation with a glass of wine or over dinner.

Continuing on the same tram line, we arrive to the National Theatre, whose fiercely unique design remains controversial and has strongly divided the locals. What do you think, do you like it?

Just beyond the theatre lies Budapest Park, with a large offering of musical programming and concerts, if you enjoy dancing, this is definitely worth a visit!

Finally, if you are visiting in the winter, both the Bálna and Budapest Park offer ice skating rinks for your enjoyment.
